| Supervisor training |
| Introduction |
| The design of a course on psychological fitness, specifically for supervisors, was impelled by: |
The fact that the psychological fitness of workers is as important as physical fitness. Psychological fitness is essential for good safety, quality and productivity. |
Supervisors play the most crucial role in the psychological fitness of their people. |
This course is most suitable for senior supervisors or junior managers with an education level of grade 12 or NQF equivalent – a good command of English is necessary.
The content of the course is firmly based on the research that underlies the SAEHWS and SAPFI© instruments and the course outcomes seek to remedy typical problems diagnosed by these instruments. |
| Outcomes of the course |
| After having completed the course, supervisors will: |
Understand the simple fundamentals of psychological fitness and the role of job resources and job demands in the psychological fitness of their people; |
Understand their role in providing job resources and alleviating job demands; |
Be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of psychological unfitness and know how to act on them; |
Know how to supervise and lead in a way that creates a climate favourable for psychological fitness and positive outcomes. |
| Design features |
The course is designed for flexibility. It comprises eight modules of one hour each and can be presented on one day or over up to eight days, consecutive or otherwise. |
The methodology is highly participative – there are 28 exercises in all – some individual but mostly in the form of discussions in small groups. The course is presented in a coaching rather than lecture style; delegates are led on a learning journey based on adult learning principles. The course is very practical with a lot of revision throughout. |
As far as the retention of knowledge is concerned, the course content is divided into three categories: ‘Absolutely must know’ (four most crucial issues); ‘must know’ (14 important learning points); ‘should know’ (basic underlying theory). |
Delegates receive a workbook for the practical exercises, training manual with all the relevant theory and background, and a certificate upon completion of the course. |
The course is presented to no less than eight delegates and no more than 20 delegates per course. |
| Organisation-specific requirements |
| The course and how it is presented can be tailor-made for an organisation’s specific requirements. A pilot course can be arranged for one group and adaptations to the course can be discussed afterwards. There is also the option of training in-house presenters for organisation-wide roll-out. |
